BitGo to acquire NYDIG institutional trading business for $42.5 million - finance news

BitGo Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: BTGO) will acquire the institutional trading business of NYDIG, according to a report by CNBC. The deal is valued at approximately $42.5 million, consisting mostly of BitGo stock.

The acquisition adds derivatives, structured products, financing, and other capital markets services to BitGo's existing custody, settlement, and wallet infrastructure. As part of the transition, approximately 30 NYDIG employees and roughly 250 institutional client relationships will join BitGo.

NYDIG will pivot its focus toward power generation, Bitcoin mining, and high-performance computing data centres, where its development pipeline currently exceeds 3 gigawatts.

Strategic context and market position

BitGo, which went public earlier this year with a market value currently under $1 billion, aims to expand its institutional capabilities. CEO Mike Belshe stated that institutions seek partners supporting the full lifecycle of digital assets, including custody, trading, financing, and settlement.

The transaction follows a period where Bitcoin topped $80,000 after months of weak trading volume. However, BitGo faces several considerations regarding the deal:

  • The company's market value has fallen below $1 billion, down from its roughly $2 billion IPO valuation.
  • The $42.5 million transaction carries limited immediate financial impact and is considered a relatively small acquisition.
  • NYDIG's exit from institutional trading to focus on infrastructure may suggest profitability or growth challenges within that sector.
  • If crypto trading activity weakens following its recent rebound, BitGo's new capabilities may generate less revenue than management expects.

Data from Insider Monkey shows that BitGo Holdings was held by 12 hedge funds in the second quarter of 2026, a decrease from 15 funds in the first quarter.
