Swiss cinema expands international reach at Venice Film Festival - finance news

Swiss films and international co-productions are featured throughout this year's Venice Film Festival and the Venice Production Bridge industry strand. Switzerland is a focus at the Venice Production Bridge, with seven projects in the Gap-Financing Market and two in the Immersive Market.

Nicola Ruffo, director of Swiss Films, noted that the combination of domestic relevance and international reach is significant for the multilingual market. Ruffo cited Petra Volpe’s 'Late Shift' as an example, which sold over 670,000 tickets outside Switzerland by the end of 2025.

Current festival entries involving Swiss production or talent include:

  • The Indies: A historical drama from Spain’s Lastor Media and Switzerland’s Alina Film, competing in Giornate degli Autori.
  • From Inside Out — The Architecture of Peter Zumthor: A Wim Wenders documentary produced by Road Movies and DCM group.
  • A Bit of Light: An Iranian film by Ali Asgari, produced in part by Geneva-based Sunny Independent Pictures.
  • Guria: A feature by Levan Koguashvili involving Zurich’s Cineworx Filmproduktion.
  • Sunset Motel: A Gilles Jobin film from Geneva’s Nadasdy Film and Cie Gilles Jobin, appearing in the Venice Immersive competition.

The Venice Production Bridge also features upcoming projects such as Flurin Giger’s 'A Year Without Summer', Valentin Merz’s 'Chocolat Amer', Stéphanie Argerich’s 'Kyushu Moon', Kaveh Bakhtiari’s 'The Smuggler', and Ursula Meier’s 'Quiet Land'.

A growing trend involves Swiss filmmakers moving toward English-language productions. Projects mentioned include Michael Koch’s English-speaking debut 'Erosion', Ursula Meier’s 'Quiet Land', Petra Volpe’s 'Frank & Louis', and Denis Rabaglia’s 'Butterfly Stroke'.

“I do not think becoming more international necessarily means becoming less Swiss. Switzerland has always been multilingual and culturally interconnected,” Ruffo said.
