Coinbase shares rise 7.6% following White House push for CLARITY Act - news news

Coinbase Global (COIN) shares rose 7.6% on Thursday to close at $172.35, marking its second consecutive sharp gain. The surge followed a White House meeting with crypto executives, including Coinbase's CEO, during which the administration urged Congress to pass the CLARITY Act.

The CLARITY Act would move oversight of most crypto trading away from securities regulators. While the stock's movement suggests the bill is a necessity, Coinbase management previously stated during its Q2 2026 call that the company could operate normally if the act fails, as the SEC and CFTC have indicated they are prepared to set rules regardless of the bill's passage.

Management noted that while the passage of a law is a preference because it endures across administrations and supports long-term investment, it is not a dependency. On the same day Coinbase rose, other crypto-linked stocks fell, with Robinhood Markets (HOOD) dropping 0.7% and Bakkt (BKKT) falling 3.1%, even as bitcoin extended a recent rally.

Financial Performance

Coinbase's financial metrics show recent shifts:

  • Trailing twelve-month revenue is $6.28 billion, a 10.4% year-on-year decrease.
  • Operating margin stands at 11.7%, below the three-year average of 17.0%.
  • Net margin is -15.7%, compared to a 19.1% average.

Despite falling crypto trading volumes, paid Coinbase 1 subscribers reached an all-time high in Q2 2026. The company is seeing adoption in prediction markets, perpetual futures, and Base, which the CEO described as the largest L2 on Ethereum.

Despite the recent gains, the current price of $172.35 is less than half of the company's 52-week high of $387.27.
