Over 150 Allina Health doctors file strike notice in Twin Cities - health news

More than 150 Allina Health doctors at Mercy Hospital have filed a 10-day unfair labor practice strike notice, according to Doctors Council-SEIU. The group, which includes psychiatrists, OB-GYNs, hospitalists, and critical care physicians, plans to strike for four days from Sept. 14 through Sept. 17.

The union, which received recognition in early 2024, stated that the notice follows three years of negotiations with the nonprofit health system that failed to produce a first contract. The physicians are seeking a "greater say in patient care" and improved working conditions, such as sick leave and time off.

We formed this union so we can openly and effectively advocate for our patients in ways that count,
Dr. Alia Sharif, an internal medical physician at Mercy Hospital - Unity Campus in Fridley, said in a written statement.

The union reported that 91% of its members voted in June to authorize the strike. Mercy Hospital operates campuses in the north metro communities of Fridley and Coon Rapids.

Allina Health issued a statement Friday night expressing disappointment that the physicians chose a strike instead of negotiations. The health system noted that the next negotiation session is scheduled for Sept. 9. Allina Health stated it remains hopeful for an agreement that recognizes the physicians' role while maintaining long-term sustainability and affordable care. The organization said it is committed to ensuring safe care during the strike and will contact patients directly if scheduling changes occur.
