UF Health proposes fifth hybrid emergency and urgent care centre in Mandarin - health news

A concept plan has been filed for a 10,130-square-foot freestanding emergency room at 12331 San Jose Blvd in Mandarin. The project, named Intuitive San Jose, is proposed for a 1.51-acre site that formerly held a gas station and convenience store.

The proposed facility would serve as UF Health Jacksonville's fifth hybrid emergency and urgent care centre, operated through a partnership with Dallas-based Intuitive Health. These centres provide 24-hour emergency care alongside urgent care available seven days a week. The model is designed to route patients to either emergency or lower-cost urgent care based on condition severity.

The site is situated adjacent to CareSpot Urgent Care Mandarin, which operates with rival Baptist Health, and approximately three miles south of HCA Florida Mandarin Emergency. The estimated cost for the Mandarin project is $14.3 million.

The Mandarin proposal follows the development of other hybrid facilities in the region:

  • Baymeadows: Opened January 2023 (12,490 square feet).
  • New Kings Road: Opened March 2023 (12,275 square feet).
  • Lane Avenue: Opened April 2023 (11,716 square feet).
  • Intracoastal: Under construction with an expected opening in early 2027.

Regarding the billing structure for these hybrid sites, KFF Health News reports that approximately 70% of patients at UF Health's Jacksonville hybrid centres are triaged and billed at lower urgent care rates. Cash-paying patients are charged a flat $250 fee for urgent care services, though costs can increase to emergency room rates if diagnostics such as bloodwork or ultrasounds are required.

The Mandarin project is currently in a preliminary phase. A Service Availability Request for the municipal utility JEA indicates the developer is exploring site viability, and no construction timeline has been confirmed.
