Sports Hub co-host Marc Bertrand announces cancer diagnosis - sports news

Marc Bertrand, co-host of 98.5 The Sports Hub’s midday show, announced during Wednesday's program that he is being treated for papillary thyroid cancer. Bertrand, 41, stated he was diagnosed a couple of months ago.

Bertrand is scheduled to undergo an ablation procedure at Mass Eye and Ear this week to treat the tumor. He aims to return to the air next Wednesday, the day the Patriots open their regular season.

Bertrand, who has been with the station since its August 2009 launch and has co-hosted with Scott Zolak since February 2015, noted that the condition is highly treatable.

“It’s the most common type of thyroid cancer and it is highly treatable so before anybody starts to worry about me — especially Zo, he loves to worry about me a lot — you can rest assured it’s gonna be fine,” said Bertrand. “It is treatable, I am an excellent hands, and I am expecting this to soon be behind me in a short amount of time.”

Bertrand said he chose to disclose the diagnosis on air to emphasize the importance of cancer screenings. He noted that he experienced no symptoms prior to discovery; rather, a screening performed years ago alerted him and his doctor to the possibility of a future diagnosis.

“Obviously it’s great to be feeling good,” said Bertrand, “but it also serves as an excellent reminder that for people who have suffered through far more dangerous types of cancers, a lot of it started with feeling totally normal. There are preventative screenings that are necessary, and if your doctor is telling you to do those things, you should go do those things.”
