Trump Financial Disclosure Reveals Stake in SpaceX Following IPO
President Donald Trump purchased between $15,001 and $50,000 in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) shares on June 23, according to a financial disclosure signed August 12 and made public August 22.
The transaction occurred two weeks after SpaceX's June 12 IPO, which was the largest in U.S. history and valued the company at $1.77 trillion. The purchase was part of more than 1,000 stock trades made by Trump during that month.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle stated that third-party financial institutions manage the president's portfolio independently.
The investment is considered a small position relative to SpaceX's roughly $2 trillion valuation, meaning it has little impact on the company's finances but serves as a personal investment by the president.
Administration Policy and Financial Exposure
Trump has directed his administration to assist in sharply increasing the number of U.S. commercial space launches. This policy priority could benefit SpaceX due to its leading position in the launch market.
Other senior administration figures also hold financial exposure to companies related to Elon Musk:
- Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler, a Trump cabinet member, earned millions from SpaceX-related investments.
- Loeffler previously invested in xAI, which later merged with SpaceX.
- PitchBook analyst Franco Granda estimated that one of Loeffler's investments could have reached between $2.2 million and $25.4 million at the SpaceX IPO valuation.
Potential Scrutiny and Market Volatility
Because SpaceX holds substantial government contracts and works closely with federal agencies, the purchase may attract scrutiny from government-watchdog groups and investors regarding potential conflicts of interest. Reuters noted that the purchase provides Trump with a financial stake in a major government contractor.
The timing of the purchase also highlighted share volatility. On June 23, the day Trump purchased his stake, SpaceX shares closed at $156.11. The shares later fell to the $135 IPO price.
The relationship between Trump and Musk has previously included public disagreements, which could introduce uncertainty for investors regarding the future business and political environment surrounding SpaceX.
According to Insider Monkey's database, SpaceX was held by 119 hedge funds in the second quarter of 2026, marking its first quarter of hedge fund data following its June IPO. Total holdings were valued at $116.45 billion.
