New La Pouquelaye Community Garden opens on former scrubland
The St Helier Community Trust has officially opened the La Pouquelaye Community Garden, a new green space transformed from former scrubland.
Transforming local land
The project has converted a previously unused area of scrubland into a structured community asset. Through the efforts of the St Helier Community Trust, the site now features a variety of horticultural installations designed for public and group use.
Significant landscape improvements have been made to the site to encourage biodiversity and local engagement. These developments include:
- The planting of various fruit trees to provide seasonal produce.
- The installation of hedges to define boundaries and provide natural habitats.
- The construction of a pagoda to serve as a central feature for visitors.
- The creation of dedicated allotment beds.
Community access and utility
The garden is intended to function as a multi-purpose space for various local community groups. The inclusion of allotment beds allows for structured gardening projects, while the pagoda and open spaces offer areas for social interaction and outdoor activities.
By repurposing the land, the Trust aims to provide a managed environment that promotes local food growing and community cohesion. The transition from unmanaged scrubland to a cultivated garden marks a significant change in the local landscape of St Helier.
