Trump Seeks Greenland Deal, Rules Out Force - news news

President Donald Trump has expressed interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, stating he is seeking “immediate negotiations” to purchase the territory. The remarks were made during his appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Trump indicated that the United States is exploring the possibility of a deal, though he did not elaborate on specific terms or offers. He emphasized that the U.S. would not resort to force to obtain Greenland, stating definitively that military action is not being considered.

The idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland has been floated previously. In 2019, a similar proposal was reportedly discussed, but ultimately abandoned after strong objections from the Danish government and Greenland's leaders. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, possessing its own parliament and significant self-governance. While Denmark handles Greenland's foreign affairs and defense, Greenlanders have considerable control over their internal affairs and natural resources.

The territory holds strategic interest due to its location and natural resources, including rare earth minerals. However, the prospect of a sale faces considerable political and logistical challenges. The Danish government has publicly stated its position that Greenland is not for sale, and any such transaction would require the consent of the Greenlandic people.

The World Economic Forum in Davos brings together global leaders from business, politics, and academia to discuss pressing economic and social issues. Trump’s comments on Greenland were made during a broader discussion of international affairs and economic cooperation.
