The University of Florida brought back the "Gator Bait" cheer during the opening quarter of Saturday night's season opener against Florida Atlantic. The chant returned after a six-year hiatus.
The university ended the use of the cheer in June 2020 due to concerns regarding possible racial undertones and "horrific historic racist imagery."
The game, held at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, resulted in a 66-21 victory for the Gators in the debut of head coach Jon Sumrall. Sumrall, who is in the fifth year of his head coaching career, commented on the stadium atmosphere following the win.
The energy, the stadium was on fire.
