Global Payments launches Genius Road Trip tour to showcase technology - technology news

Global Payments has launched a nationwide tour, titled the Genius Road Trip, to demonstrate its flagship Genius point of sale system. The tour begins this week in Las Vegas and will make more than 40 stops across the United States.

The showcase, called Genius World, features a miniature walkable neighbourhood containing a cafe, restaurant, pizzeria, and other retail settings. It is designed for banks, merchants, resellers, and independent sales organisations to test the technology. The Genius suite, launched in 2025, includes AI-powered voice ordering for handheld devices and an AI reporting tool for sales data queries.

The tour is part of a multi-year turnaround strategy. This follows a series of transactions where Global Payments sold its issuer business to FIS for $13.5 billion and acquired Worldpay from GTCR and FIS for $22.7 billion. These moves aim to focus the company on payment technology across different business lines.

The company faces competition from fintechs including PayPal, Stripe, Square, and Fiserv. While William Blair analysts noted strong growth for Genius, they argued the system is not a competitive offering from a technology standpoint. However, Global Payments reported that revenue from small- to medium-sized businesses grew 4% in the most recent quarter, with a 25% sequential increase in Genius bookings.

David Rumph, president of SMB for Global Payments, stated:

"We want to bring all of the partners together to hear about the investments that we've made and our roadmap."

Mizuho Americas analysts noted that the company's 2026 earnings face headwinds due to the ongoing Middle East conflict, as travel capacity and forward bookings remain below pre-conflict levels.
