Nvidia expands AI infrastructure role through massive equity investments - finance news

Nvidia reported revenue of $96.2 billion for the recent quarter, with Data Center sales reaching $89 billion. The company guided to approximately $108 billion in revenue for the current quarter.

The chipmaker's equity investments have grown from less than $100 million in early 2020 to roughly $99 billion. This portfolio includes stakes in several companies:

  • Intel (INTC)
  • CoreWeave (CRWV)
  • Coherent (COHR)
  • Nokia (NOK)
  • Synopsys (SNPS)
  • Nebius (NBIS)

Nvidia CFO Colette Kress stated that frontier AI labs face "extraordinary demand" for computing power but are "growing faster than what their balance sheets and credit profiles can support." Kress noted that AI labs where Nvidia expects to use its balance sheet could account for roughly a quarter of its business next year.

To support customers, Nvidia has implemented several financial measures:

  • Providing large customers up to a year to pay for data centre purchases.
  • Guaranteeing minimum revenue levels for some AI cloud providers to help them secure financing.
  • Disclosing up to $108.5 billion in guarantees, with $105 billion tied to the SB Energy data centre buildout for OpenAI. This support phases in as nine data centres come online starting around fiscal 2029.

Accounts receivable rose to $63.1 billion, and the average collection time increased to 60 days from 45. The company also reported preliminary agreements with large investors aimed at channeling more than $500 billion into AI infrastructure.

During the quarter, Nvidia returned approximately $25.8 billion through buybacks and dividends. Gains on its investment portfolio added $7.8 billion to income during the period.

"I think the only regret that I have is that I didn't invest more and sooner,"

said CEO Jensen Huang regarding investments in AI labs.
