Trump financial disclosure reveals stake in SpaceX - finance news

President Donald Trump purchased between $15,001 and $50,000 in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) shares on 23 June, according to a financial disclosure signed on 12 August and made public on 22 August.

The purchase was part of more than 1,000 stock trades Trump made during that month. The acquisition occurred two weeks after the 12 June IPO of SpaceX, which was the largest in U.S. history and valued the company at $1.77 trillion.

Administration investments and policy

The disclosure reflects a policy environment that may benefit SpaceX. President Trump has directed his administration to help sharply increase the number of U.S. commercial space launches, a priority that could benefit the company due to its leading position in the launch market.

Other senior administration figures also hold financial exposure to companies owned by Elon Musk. Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler, a Trump cabinet member, previously invested in xAI, which later merged with SpaceX. PitchBook analyst Franco Granda estimated to Reuters that one of her investments could have reached between $2.2 million and $25.4 million at the SpaceX IPO valuation.

Conflicts of interest and scrutiny

Because SpaceX holds substantial government contracts and works closely with federal agencies, the purchase gives Trump a financial stake in a major government contractor. Reuters noted this could prompt investors and government-watchdog groups to examine potential conflicts of interest. Even without changes in government policy, the increased scrutiny could create reputational risk for SpaceX.

The White House has stated that third-party financial institutions manage the president's portfolio independently. White House spokesman Davis Ingle told Reuters:

The relationship between Trump and Musk has previously involved public disagreements, which could introduce uncertainty for investors if tensions emerge again.

Market performance and hedge fund activity

The timing of the purchase highlights volatility in the stock. On 23 June, the day Trump purchased his stake, SpaceX shares closed at $156.11, but the price later fell to the $135 IPO price.

According to Insider Monkey's database, SpaceX was held by 119 hedge funds in the second quarter of 2026. This was the first quarter of hedge fund data following the June IPO, with total holdings valued at $116.45 billion. While Trump's investment represents a tiny position relative to the company's roughly $2 trillion valuation, the disclosure serves as a signal of confidence.
