Pope Leon XIV implements new financial management strategy for Vatican - finanse news

Pope Leon XIV is changing the management of Vatican finances, resulting in increased assets for APSA, improved results for the Vatican Bank (IOR), and new donations from the USA.

In 2025, Leon XIV eased regulations introduced during the pontificate of Francis, permitting the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA) to use other financial intermediaries in certain situations. This follows previous issues, such as the costly and non-transparent purchase of luxury property on Sloane Avenue in London involving the Secretariat of State, which led to losses and the prosecution of several officials.

The Pope has also implemented personnel changes. In August 2026, he renewed the Council for the Economy, retaining Cardinal Reinhard Marx as coordinator while introducing new members, including:

  • Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś
  • Denis Duverne, former AXA manager
  • Gisela Liechtenstein
  • Elena Wettstein Principato, associated with UBS

Financial reports indicate the following figures:

  • The Holy See recorded a consolidated surplus of €1.6 million in 2024, compared to a €51.2 million loss the previous year.
  • The IOR achieved a net profit of €51 million in 2025, a 55.5 per cent increase from the previous year, transferring €24.3 million to the Pope for religious and charitable activities.
  • APSA's net assets increased by €89 million in 2025 to €2.686 billion, driven by rising gold prices (€40.8 million) and real estate (€39.2 million).

Donations from the United States have also risen. The Papal Foundation announced $15 million in support for 144 initiatives across 75 countries, and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association recorded larger contributions. The source suggests this improvement may relate to the popularity of Leon XIV, who was born in Chicago.
