40% of UK Drivers Say Tech Makes Them Worse Drivers - technology news

New research from AA Driving School reveals that nearly half (40%) of UK drivers believe in-car technology is negatively impacting their driving abilities. The study, released today, highlights growing concerns about driver distraction and over-reliance on systems like navigation, parking assist, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

The AA surveyed a representative sample of drivers across the United Kingdom, finding that many are becoming less attentive and slower to react due to their dependence on these technological aids. While these systems are designed to enhance safety, the research suggests they can inadvertently create new risks.

“We’re seeing drivers becoming overly reliant on technology and losing some of the fundamental skills that make them safe and confident behind the wheel,” said a spokesperson for AA Driving School. “It’s crucial that drivers understand the limitations of these systems and maintain a high level of awareness and control, regardless of what the car is doing.”

The research indicates a particular concern among younger drivers, who have grown up with technology integrated into every aspect of their lives. However, drivers of all ages expressed reservations about the potential for technology to diminish their driving skills and create a false sense of security. The AA Driving School recommends regular practice of basic driving maneuvers and encourages drivers to remain actively engaged with the road, even when utilizing in-car technology. They also suggest drivers familiarize themselves with the specific features and limitations of their vehicle’s technology to avoid over-reliance and ensure safe operation.

The findings underscore the need for ongoing education and awareness campaigns to promote responsible use of in-car technology and to remind drivers that technology should augment, not replace, their own skills and judgment. As technology continues to evolve, it is vital that drivers adapt and maintain a critical understanding of its impact on their driving performance.
