NASA Plane Lands Gearless in Texas, Sparks Flames
A NASA research aircraft made an unusual and dramatic landing at Ellington Field in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday after experiencing a malfunction that prevented the deployment of its landing gear. Video footage circulating online shows the plane, a modified Gulfstream III, touching down without landing gear and sliding along the runway, trailing flames as it slowed.
According to NASA officials, the aircraft was conducting research flights as part of the agency’s environment and climate research programs. The pilots, whose names have not been released, reported the landing gear failure and executed a controlled emergency landing. The plane skidded for a significant distance, generating sparks and flames, before coming to a complete stop.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. First responders were on scene immediately following the landing to assess the situation and secure the aircraft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also investigating the incident. While the cause of the landing gear failure remains under investigation, NASA has stated that the pilots followed established emergency procedures.
Ellington Field, also known as Houston Spaceport, is a joint civil-military airport located near Houston. It serves as a base for NASA’s Johnson Space Center and is frequently used for research and testing flights. This incident highlights the inherent risks associated with aviation and the rigorous training pilots undergo to handle emergency situations. NASA has temporarily grounded the aircraft pending a thorough inspection and repairs. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
