Idaho Beef Recall: 3,000 Lbs Pulled Over E. coli Concerns
An Idaho company, Forward, is voluntarily recalling approximately 3,000 pounds of raw ground beef due to a potential contamination with E. coli bacteria. The recall, announced by the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), affects 16-ounce vacuum-sealed packages labeled “Forward Seasoned Ground Beef.”
The recalled beef products bear the establishment number “EST. 17249” and were produced on October 22, 2023. The product was shipped to retail locations in Idaho and Montana. Consumers who have purchased the recalled ground beef are urged to immediately discard it or return it to the place of purchase.
FSIS initiated the investigation on November 2, 2023, after receiving a report of illness from a Montana resident. Subsequent traceback investigations linked the illness to the Forward ground beef. While the specific strain of E. coli has not been explicitly stated in the release, E. coli infections can cause severe illness, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting.
The USDA and FSIS are continuing their investigation and will provide updates as they become available. Consumers with questions can contact Forward at (208) 882-2750.
The recall is part of ongoing efforts by the USDA to ensure the safety of the nation’s food supply. Consumers are reminded to practice safe food handling techniques, including cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
